ABOUT US

Oxford University Modern Pentathlon Association offers one of  the university's most challenging and diverse interdisciplinary sports opportunities. We cater to those of all skill levels, from complete beginners to those seeking challenging high-level competition.

Modern pentathlon as a sport consists of five disciplines designed to test the complete athlete, which are spread between four events:

Swimming (200m)

Épée Fencing

Showjumping

Combined Event (Running (4x800m) and Pistol Shooting)

For the social athlete, OUMPA also offers regular social events with meals, crew dates and nights out being offered throughout term time. The opportunity for a trip to G&Ds after Tuesday night training is often the highlight of the week and at competitions the team is infamous for its ability to perform in the notorious 6th and 7th events.

As you might expect, we are currently running a reduced timetable in order to ensure safety measures are met. But don't let that discourage you from getting involved! We have all the necessary precautions in place to make sure that training can continue in a safe and fun manner.

EVENTS

OUMPA runs and competes in several key events throughout the year, so keep your diaries open for these exciting opportunities. Note that all competitions listed are subject to current government guidelines and restrictions. However, we expect to have the following events:

  • Novice Varsity Match, MT - A friendly introduction competition for pentathlon beginners to compete against those from Cambridge. Expected to be held remotely this year, details to come soon.

  • Cuppers, HT - Bring all your friends along for the ultimate competition to decide which college is truly the best! A friendly, open-to-all competition, which will hopefully take place in Hilary term.

  • Old Blues, HT - Your chance to compete with the golden oldies themselves and meet some living legends. Though the meal is by far the most famous part, the competition is a good one.

  • BUCS, HT - Your last chance to prove yourself before varsity selection. OUMPA have a history of doing Oxford proud at this one. Plus there are shiny medals up for grabs.

  • Varsity, Easter Vac - The Oxford vs Cambridge showdown. Held on neutral ground in Tonbridge, Kent, this is the competition of the year. And oh boy is it a big one. Sponsored by EY, this will be the highlight of your pentathlon career.
